The Darjeeling district administration has identified a much-needed alternative route to enter Darjeeling town from Lebong, which is from an opposite direction to the existing entry point to the popular hill station from Ghoom.
Lebong is on the opposite direction of Ghoom and this new route is expected to provide a circular traffic movement through Darjeeling.
S.Ponnambalam, the Darjeeling district magistrate, said: “We have identified an alternative alignment to connect Darjeeling and informed the PWD department.”
The alternative road runs towards the north from Darjeeling town through Lebong and Dabaipani before finally connecting Teesta Bazar.
“This road would be around 32-35km long,” said Ponnambalam. The Darjeeling-Lebong-Teesta Bazar route will provide an option for travellers from Sikkim, Kalimpong and Siliguri to reach Darjeeling town without touching Ghoom. The road would run parallel to Peshok Road.
