A concerned father who stepped out of his house braving the storm on Sunday night to look for his son who went to watch the IPL final at a friend’s place died after a concrete chunk fell on his head from a cornice under which he had taken shelter.

Police said Mohammad Shajid, 51, took shelter under the cornice of a two-storey building at 15/H/14 Bibi Bagan Lane amid heavy rain and strong winds around 10.45pm, said an officer of Entally police station.

“A chunk came off the cornice of the building and landed on his head.”

Shajid was taken to the NRS Medical College and Hospital, where he was declared dead.

A Kolkata Municipal Corporation official said a civic team went to inspect the building, in Ward 56, after the incident was reported. “The building is not dilapidated. Only a small portion of the cornice broke. It was an unfortunate accident,” the official said.

Police sources said this was the only Remal-linked death reported in the city.

“We had made announcements asking people to stay indoors and requested residents of dilapidated buildings to temporarily shift to storm shelters,” an officer said.
