Mamata Banerjee on Thursday said her government had rejected 6,000 applications claiming compensation under state government schemes announced for the Amphan-affected people across the state after carrying out investigations at the grassroots.

“Out of 40,000 applications, who claimed that they were deprived of compensation, 6,000 have been rejected as investigations revealed they were not entitled to the ex-gratia amount as they were not affected by the cyclone at all,” the chief minister said at Nabanna on Thursday after holding a meeting with top government officials.

Mamata said about 26,000 of the applications had already made it to the lists prepared by district magistrates and the state government would include the names of 6,000 people in the lists as their names were missing from the lists of beneficiaries.

But a section of the officials raised questions over the chief minister’s claim that names of 26,000 applicants were already in the lists prepared by the district magistrates.

“The lists were drawn up at the block level. I am not aware of any such lists prepared by the district magistrates,” said an official.

The chief minister admitted there were some mistakes on the part of the administration as it was pushing the schemes hard to ensure the affected got the compensations as early as possible.

“We made a mistake as we hurried to give compensation to the affected people. The Left Front government never tried to give either compensation or relief to people. We try to work for people and that’s why there are so noises,” she said.

Sources monitoring the scheme said it was very significant that Mamata had revealed the number of rejected applications.

The chief minister said that names of only 0.5 per cent of the actual affected were missing from the list of beneficiaries. “At some places, there was more politics. We have inquired and we have reviewed… It is only 0.5 percent of the affected whose names were missing. But our government has taken prompt action to ensure that no genuine applicant is denied the compensation,” said the chief minister.
