The one-year-old flyover connecting Jinjirabazar with Budge Budge was shut down on Wednesday morning after a crack was detected, said officials of the Calcutta Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA), the custodian of the structure.

Engineers of a committee formed to assess the health of several bridges in the city inspected the flyover on Wednesday evening and said the crack was “nothing serious”.

“In all likelihood, the flyover would be open for vehicular movement on Thursday morning,” said a CMDA official.

A member of the committee, formed after the collapse of the Majerhat bridge in September 2018, said the top layer of bitumen over a construction joint had cracked. “We inspected the flyover but the crack was nothing alarming. The bitumen coat above the construction joint had cracked for some reason. It was not a crack in the main structure,” the member said.

A senior CMDA official told The Telegraph that a proper check of the flyover would be conducted soon.

“Someone had taken a video of the crack and after it came to our notice, we decided to stop traffic on the flyover. CMDA engineers and officials and bridge experts inspected the crack along with engineers of the private company that built the flyover,” a senior CMDA official said. “We have asked the private company to file a report.”

Each span of a flyover has expansion joints at two ends. But the Jinjirabazar flyover has one expansion joint for two spans. “There is a gap or joint between each of the spans and this is called a construction joint,” he said.

The 6.8km two-lane flyover was thrown open in 2018.
