On a day when allegations of large-scale poll-related malpractices were levelled against the ruling Trinamul Congress across the state, CPM supporters were accused of barging into a polling station at Baduria in North 24-Parganas and randomly stamping on the ballots against the party's symbol.

A video circulated on social media, showing some alleged CPM workers entering a polling station under Aturia gram panchayat in Baduria and stamping on the party's symbol.

Local sources said shortly after the voting began, a group of youths entered the polling station and took away the ballot pads of all the three tiers — gram panchayat, panchayat samity and zilla parishad and began stamping on the CPM symbol.

Rejecting the allegation, the CPM leadership termed the incident as a play "staged and enacted" by ruling party workers with the support of the district administration to cover up their malpractices.

“The booth was actually looted on Friday night and the polling could not be commenced till 11 am on Saturday as the polling personnel were reluctant to conduct polls in such a situation,” said CPM’s North 24-Parganas district secretary Mrinal Chakraborty.

“Now Trinamul leadership has been trying to malign us to hide their misdeed. The video was deliberately filmed and made viral with a malicious motive. It appears that the person who filmed the video was part of the gang that stamped on the ballots,” Chakraborty told The Telegraph.

Local Trinamul leaders, however, said Chakraborty was weaving a false narrative.

A local Trinamul worker said: “The gang threatened the polling personnel and began stamping on the CPM symbol on all the three ballot papers apparently to ensure lead for the party.”
