The CPM has revoked the suspension of former MLA Tanmoy Bhattacharya, accused of outraging the modesty of a woman when she had gone to his residence on a professional assignment.

CPM sources said the party withdrew Bhattacharya’s suspension as the internal complaints committee formed to probe the allegation could not find evidence of his guilt.

A CPM leader from North 24-Parganas said state party secretary Md Salim on Friday night told district committee secretary Mrinal Chakraborty that the suspension on Bhattacharya had been withdrawn and the latter could resume party activities.

“After getting the information from Salim-da, the North 24-Parganas district secretary circulated a message in the WhatsApp group of district committee members about the decision to lift Bhattacharya’s suspension,” the leader said.

The CPM suspended Bhattacharya on October 27 within hours of the woman going public with her complaint on social media. While announcing the decision to suspend Bhattacharya, an incident that had prompted attacks from Trinamool, Salim had said the party’s internal committee would probe the charge.

On Saturday, Bhattacharya said: “From the beginning I said it was a well-planned conspiracy.... I shall unveil the identity of those involved in this conspiracy during the legal battle....”

After going public on social media, the woman lodged a complaint with Baranagar police that Bhattacharya sat on her lap when she met him for work. A molestation case was lodged against Bhattacharya. He was called for interrogation five times. He claimed that after the fifth time, cops told him he would notbe called again.
