Calcutta High Court on Friday asked Bengal chief secretary H.K. Dwivedi why proceedings should not be initiated against him for contempt of court after the government had failed to implement its order.

Sanat Kumar Ghosh, a retired employee of South Bengal State Transport Corporation, had filed a petition in the high court seeking an order asking the transport department to introduce pension scheme for retired employees.

After hearing the case in detail, Justice Arindam Mukherjee issued an order eight months ago asking the government to consider whether a pension scheme could be initiated for retired state transport employees.

Two weeks ago, Ghosh moved a contempt of court petition before the court alleging that the order had not been complied with by the government yet.

During the hearing, the government’s lawyer informed the judge that the transport department might have considered the issue but until the finance department put its seal of approval, the pension scheme would not be implemented. After the hearing, the judge issued the order against the chief secretary. The court also held that the transport secretary and the finance secretary were also responsible.
