The hearing of Nobel laureate Amartya Sen’s application for a stay on an order issued by Visva-Bharati for his eviction from a stretch of land at his ancestral home Pratichi in Santiniketan concluded in the court of Birbhum district judge on Friday.
A source said the court was likely to pronounce the judgement on August 8.
“The district judge heard advocates of both sides as they submitted documents to establish their claims and allegations. The order may come out on August 8,” an advocate of the Birbhum district court in Suri said.
Visva-Bharati had served an order on Sen on April 18, asking him to vacate 13 decimals of land that he had allegedly “encroached” by May 6. Sen moved Calcutta High Court demanding a stay on the eviction order.
The high court on May 4 stayed the eviction notice till the Birbhum court disposed of the case.
Over 300 academics had recently signed a petition, seeking steps against the Visva-Bharati administration for trying to evict Sen from a parcel of land at Pratichi.
