Three relatives, including a three-year-old child, of a Kalimpong woman who died from the novel coronavirus infection were discharged from a hospital in Siliguri on Saturday.

Among the trio, the child and her grandfather had tested positive for the coronavirus. The child’s mother had tested negative but had been staying with her daughter at Dr Chhang’s Super Specialty Hospital

“Ten persons from the family had been admitted to the hospital. Among them, three persons have been released. It is a good news for the people of north Bengal,” said a health official here. “They will, however, be in home quarantine for the next 14 days.”

Anit Thapa, the chairman of the board of administrators of the GTA who has been staying in Kalimpong for the past few days, said: “Some people have been discharged but the danger is not over yet. We would urge people to follow government orders and stay safe.”

He visited the local leprosy hospital where he handed over some basic necessities to patients.

The GTA, Thapa said, has opened helplines for people from the GTA area who are stranded in different metros of the country.

“We have opened helpline numbers for GTA region people who are stuck in Delhi, Calcutta, Bangalore, Chennai and Mumbai. Those numbers have been circulated through social media,” he said.

A similar facility has been opened in Siliguri for people from the Darjeeling hills who are stuck in the city because of the lockdown.

“We are extending all possible help to those who are stuck in Siliguri. They are being provided with food grains; transport is being provided to hill patients who need dialysis and check-up. Students are being helped out too,” said Binny Sharma, a social worker.
