Calcutta: The Bengal government has decided to engage senior IAS officers to coordinate with other states to bring back stranded migrant labourers.
“They will work as nodal officers and coordinate with two to three states each to bring back migrant labourers. The state government does not want to act in a hurry as it has to ensure that none of the workers face hardships during the travel, and at the same time see to it that they get proper quarantine facilities on their return,” said a senior official.
A notification related to the appointment of the nodal officers will be issued soon, he added. Coordination with the states is important, sources said, as the Bengal government is in favour of proper health screening of the migrant labourers before they begin their journey.
“The Centre will allow special trains to ferry stranded people. But it is still not clear whether they will require to buy tickets. We would urge the Centre to allow them to travel free of cost,” said a source.
