Mamata Banerjee on Saturday appealed to the faithful to offer Id prayers at home as religious gatherings are banned under the Centre’s pandemic-related lockdown guidelines.

Sources said imams had already requested people to offer prayers at home this year.

Id will be celebrated in India on Monday. Mamata said people should not forget the social-distancing norms during Id as the country was still battling the pandemic.

“You have to save yourself and your family. You have to save the society too. So please maintain social distancing by staying at home,” she said, adding that there would be no gathering on Red Road for Id prayers this year. “I can understand that you will feel bad. For this year, please stay at home,” the chief minister said.
