Many localities in Malda town were inundated following heavy showers on Thursday.
The hour-long rain exposed the poor sewerage of the town. It also prompted residents to express their disgruntlement, some even hitting the streets in protest.
The administrators of the civic body pleaded helplessness, claiming major drains of the town could not be cleaned because of shortage of workers during the lockdown. The residents and even some former councillors have expressed the fear that the situation might worsen during the monsoon.
Dulal Sarkar, a senior member of the board of administrators, admitted to the intensity of the problem.
“I inspected the waterlogged areas. Even the road in front of the residence of the district magistrate was under water for hours,” Sarkar said.
