Almost a week after BJP youth leader Arjun Chowrasia was found dead in north Calcutta, police managed to record the statement of his family members and his elder brother.

Till Tuesday, the family had allegedly been refusing to cooperate with the Calcutta police, probing the unnatural death of the 26-year-old pice president of Yuva Morcha of Cossipore-Belgachia Mandal-1 of the BJP.

The family responded to the third summons sent by the police in connection with the investigation of the unnatural death, sources said.

Earlier, the family had said they did not have faith in Calcutta police. They also alleged that the police snatched Chowrasia’s body by assaulting his mother and sisters.

Chowrasia’s elder brother Anand appeared before the investigators at Chitpur police station at 11am on Wednesday and left the police station after four-and-a half-hours.

Another team of officers went to his home to question his mother and other family members.

An officer said questions were related to Chowrasia’s monthly income, his expenses and his relationship with his siblings.

“We have learned that the victim had got his salary on Thursday, before his body was found. We are trying to find out how he would usually spend his salary and if anyone in the family had any altercation with him before his death,” said the officer.

Police had come to know about Chowrasia being missing from home on Thursday midnight when one of his brothers came to the police station reporting his absence.

“It was not unusual for a young man to stay out close to midnight. But when the family came to report, it was apparent that they were concerned and there might have been some reason for their concern. We are trying to find out if anything unusual had happened on Thursday night,” said an officer in the probe team.

Calcutta police on Wednesday submitted a prayer before the court to claim possession of Chowrasia’s clothes and other belongings that have been kept in Command Hospital in Alipore since the time his post-mortem was conducted there last Saturday.

A police officer said the hospital would be able to handover the apparel only following a court order.

The court is yet to hear the appeal.

“The entire process of sending the clothes and other articles for forensic examination has been stalled due to this delay in the handover,” said one of the investigators.
