Calcutta police on Wednesday handed over to the CRPF five rooms on the Raj Bhavan premises, including those used by an additional commissioner of police and the fire and emergency services, after the Centre refused to reconsider its decision to deploy central forces for the security of governor Jagdeep Dhankhar.

Sources said the city police and the CRPF would hold a meeting on Friday for better coordination between the two agencies for the governor’s security. The tussle between Raj Bhavan and the ruling establishment has been an impediment to developing proper coordination between Calcutta police and the governor’s office, sources said.

Since Dhankhar’s arrival at Raj Bhavan over three months ago, there have been several instances of friction with the ruling establishment. The governor has often made public statements that have been deemed critical of the Mamata Banerjee government.

Asked at a news conference to respond to a statement made by Dhankhar earlier on Thursday, the chief minister said: “Please don’t ask me the question. I cannot reply to their BJP party man. No, no, no, no.”

The state government has questioned the Union home ministry’s decision to deploy central forces to guard Dhankhar, but the Centre did not reconsider it, citing intelligence inputs.

Sources said the CRPF would build a security cover on the Raj Bhavan premises.

“But the city police have to make arrangements for the governor’s security outside Raj Bhavan’s premises. Both the city police and the CRPF should have offices inside the building to ensure a proper security arrangement in and around Raj Bhavan,” said a senior government official.

The official said that till now, Calcutta police had an outpost inside Raj Bhavan under an additional commissioner, who used to look after the security of the governor, both inside and outside Raj Bhavan.

Sources said Thursday’s handover of rooms was another indication of the lack of coordination between the CRPF and the city police.

“It is still not clear how the fire department will work now if there is an emergency. The fire department had set up the unit at Raj Bhavan as it wanted to make sure that there was no delay in taking action in case of an emergency,” a source said.

Multiple sources said the CRPF should have allowed the additional commissioner of police to use a room on the premises.
