More than 150 jewellers had an hour-long meeting with police officers in north Calcutta's Chitpore on Saturday.

A set of advisories, issued by Lalbazar on Friday for jewellers in the wake of a spate of armed burglaries in stores around Calcutta, was discussed extensively at the meeting.

Mandatory installation of CCTV cameras inside and outside the store, earmarking a location outside the store for receiving the output so that the person monitoring it — away from a possible heist — can call the cops, and a bar on visitors wearing a helmet are some of the steps that the police have asked the stores to implement.

"We had a very fruitful meeting. We had a detailed discussion on how to implement the steps mentioned in the guideline," said Samar De, working president of the Swarna Shilpa Bachao Committee, an umbrella association of Bengal's jewellers.

Representatives of the committee, which counts over 10,000 members across the state, met a senior police officer at Lalbazar on Friday. The advisory was issued to them at the Lalbazar meeting. Saturday's meeting, a follow-up, involved a larger group of jewellers.

Close to 150 jewellers or their representatives — from Bowbazar, the wholesale market of Burrabazar and adjoining areas — attended the meeting. Apart from a couple of senior officers from Lalbazar, the officers-in-charge of Burrabazar, Posta and Muchipara police stations represented the cops.

"We have prepared the advisory. The jewellers may face some problems in implementing them. We want them to come back to us and share the problems...," said a senior officer who was part of the meeting.

Sources from both sides pointed to one of the steps like the gate of a store must be shut which might not be easy to implement.

"Many stores might not want to keep the gate shut. Especially the small stores. It might hurt business," said a source.
