An Alipurduar sub-inspector has been arrested for allegedly using the official email account of the district police chief to obtain call records of four persons linked to an extortion case against former Bengal IPS officer Bharati Ghosh.

Pradip Rath, attached to a cell in Alipurduar SP Sunil Kumar Yadav’s office, was taken into custody on Friday. The police have also named Ghosh in the latest case as Rath is suspected to have provided her the call records.

The extortion case was filed at Daspur police station in West Midnapore over two years ago. Ghosh joined the BJP recently.

Rath, posted in West Midnapore when the gold-linked extortion racket came to light, had been arrested in the case earlier and later got bail. After that, he was posted in Alipurduar.

According to a complaint by Kalyan Sinha Roy, the additional Alipurduar SP, Rath used police chief Yadav’s ID to write to telecom service providers and got the call records of the four persons.

The four include a sub-inspector earlier posted in Daspur, a CID inspector and two residents of West Midnapore, one of whom is a complainant in another case that was registered at Daspur. Chandan Majhi, a businessman in Daspur, had accused Ghosh and the others of extorting gold from him.

“After accessing the records, he mailed those from the official email of his office to his personal email. There are indications he has supplied these details to Ghosh,” said a police officer.
