Two policemen and a civic volunteer got injured in an attack allegedly orchestrated by some villagers under Goalpokhor police station of North Dinajpur on Tuesday night.
The injured are admitted to North Bengal Medical College and Hospital in Siliguri. Police have arrested 15 persons so far in connection with the assault.
Sources said that over the past few years, the families of Mohammad Ismail and Abu Kalam at Majlishpur village were fighting over the ownership of a parcel of land.
On Tuesday night, Ismail was allegedly detained by Kalam’s family, which made the former’s family inform the police.
Sources said that as a police team from Panjipara outpost under Goalpokhor police station arrived at the village, some residents, including women, stopped them.
As police started making inquiries about Ismail, an altercation ensued and villagers allegedly attacked the police team
Two policemen and a civic volunteer were beaten up. They were finally rescued by other members of the team and rushed to the NBMCH. Additional forces brought the situation under control.
“The team went to the village to rescue the person who was reportedly detained. It is unfortunate that they were attacked. We later conducted raids and arrested 15 persons, including four women. A police picket has been posted in the village,” said Kartick C. Mondal, the additional SP of Islampur police district.
Police sources suspect that these attackers were close to Kalam. However, probe is on.
