A police team led by an assistant commissioner of police on Tuesday went to the flat of Chaitali Tiwari in Asansol to interrogate the BJP councillor on her role in the blanket distribution stampede where three persons died last week.

Chaitali and her husband Jitendra Tiwari, also a BJP leader and former Asansol mayor, were not present in their flat at Ghanshyam Apartment when the police team reached at 10am.

After waiting for nearly 30 minutes, the police returned after pasting a notice on the door asking her to be present at her residence for interrogation at 10am on Thursday “without fail”.

On Monday, the police had gone to Chaitali’s flat. Finding it locked, they pasted a notice intimating her about Tuesday’s interrogation.

Sources said the Tiwari couple was in Calcutta for legal steps in the high court to deal with the police complaint against them. They filed the case in the court of Justice Joy Sengupta and it is likely to be heard on Wednesday.

Three persons died in a stampede in Asansol during a blanket distribution on December 14, shortly after leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, who was the chief guest, left the venue. The event was hosted by the local BJP unit.

Jitendra on Tuesday tweeted: “I will not leave Bengal. I was born in this land of Bengal and I will die in the arms of this Bengal mother. Trinamulleaders of Asansol can do what they can.”

Contacted, Jitendra said: “I have no idea about the notice. I don’t know if the police went to my house today.”

Accusing Trinamul leaders in Asansol of harassing them, Jitendra said: “I understand there are several Trinamul leaders who... want to drive us out of the state. But we were born here and we will be here. Politically they are not able to confront us. The way my wife is raising her voice against corruption in Asansol municipal corporation is causing them great inconvenience. So the police are trying to arrest us.”

The police also arrested BJP councillor Amit Tulsiyanon Tuesday for his alleged role in the stampede. Sources said Tulsiyan, close to Jitendra, was one of the organisers of the blanket distribution event.

The police started a case of culpable homicide not amounting to murder against the Tiwaris based on a complaint filed by the son of one of the victims on Saturday. Seven persons have been arrested so far.

On Tuesday, Chaitalimoved Calcutta High Court to seek protection and challenge the police FIR. She claimed she might be harassed in the name of probe.
