The Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) posted at the India-Nepal border busted a cattle-smuggling racket and intercepted six persons, including a police constable, in Kharibari block of Siliguri sub-division on Wednesday.
Sources said SSB intercepted a truck and recovered 32 buffaloes from it. Six persons in the vehicle, including Fani Roy, a constable of the state police, were detained and handed over to Kharibari police station where they were arrested.
Roy, from Alipurduar, was posted in Naxalbari. Of the other five, four are from Bihar while one is from Assam.
Police have started a probe.
In another incident, troops of the 72 battalion of the Border Security Force (BSF) posted at Kauligarh border outpost at the India-Bangla border in North Dinajpur district nabbed two Bangladeshi residents on Tuesday while they were allegedly trying to cross the international border with a silver bar weighing 250gm and two cell phones. Munirul and Md Juwel Ali, both from Thakurgaon district, were handed over to Goalpokhar police.
Crude bombs
In Malda, seven crude bombs were recovered from a mango plantation in Manikchak of Malda district on Wednesday.
Some local residents spotted a bag in the plantation near Rajnagar field area. They informed police who reached the spot. Later, a bomb squad arrived at the spot and found the bombs that were defused at a deserted location.
A few months back, four persons died in Gopalpur, Manikchak, while making crude bombs.
