A local court in Cooch Behar ordered four-day police custody to Anutosh Roy, the president of the managing committee of a state-aided co-educational higher secondary school on Friday.
Anutosh, also known as Danu, was accused of sending lewd messages to female students of higher classes and of making indecent proposals to female teachers of the institution.
On Thursday, as the students gathered at the school to protest over the brutal killing of the junior doctor in RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Calcutta, some female students told the headmaster that Roy, who had been the president for almost 10 years now, regularly sent them lewd messages via cell phone.
They also filed a written complaint with him. Soon, some women teachers verbally complained to the headmaster that Roy made lewd proposals to them.
Some guardians and former students reached the school and resorted to protests as the news spread. The headmaster spoke with district education department officials and informed the police.
A complaint was filed with the police and later, Roywas arrested.
Many students, with their guardians, andex-students assembled outside the school on Friday. They held a protest march, demanding Roy’s punishment. The agitated students also burnt his effigy and the nameplate that was put outside his chamber.
“Some students and locals, however, demonstrated outside the school but it didn’t disrupt classes,” the headmaster said today.
There are around 900 students in the school, he said. “We would encourage the students to submit their complaints in the complaint box at the school. It would help us in knowing the problem earlier and we can take necessary steps,” he said.
Roy, who was nabbed yesterday, was produced at the court today. “We will interrogate him to gather information about the charges levelled against him,” said apolice officer.
