Governor C.V. Ananda Bose rushed to a private nursing home in Cooch Behar on Sunday morning to check the health of a Trinamul leader attacked on Saturday night, spoke with his family members and assured them of every help.
On Saturday night, associates of an Independent backed by the BJP in Gitaldaha-I panchayat allegedly abducted Raju Haque, the son of Khalil Haque, a Trinamul candidate contesting the rural polls.
Mafujar Rehman, Trinamul president of the panchayat, along with five others, started searching for Raju. The abductors allegedly attacked the search team. Mafujar was hit by sharp weapons.
The injured were rushed to the Dinhata subdivisional hospital. Mafujar was shifted to a private nursing home in Cooch Behar where he is critical.
So far, 32 persons were arrested for their alleged role in the violence.
“Some BJP-backed goons had attacked our party leader and he is critical. Across Cooch Behar district, BJP is trying to foment tension ahead of the rural polls by perpetrating violence,” said Parthapratim Roy, Trinamul’s spokesperson in the district.
On Sunday morning, Bose reached the private nursing home where Mafujar was admitted to speak with the injured leader's family members and doctors.
Trinamul leaders in Cooch Behar said the governor was trying to achieve "a balancing act".
“So far, he had met people who are from the Opposition parties, especially the BJP, and spoken with leaders of the saffron camp. It was biased, so he tried to strike a balance by visiting the hospital today (Sunday) to meet one of our injured party leaders,” said a Trinamul district leader.
Udayan Guha, the north Bengal development minister and the Dinhata MLA of Trinamul, who had alleged on Saturday that Bose was acting at "the BJP's behest", was equally critical on Sunday.
“He (governor Bose) has not spent a word on Trinamul workers and leaders who are also facing attacks across the state. This is unfortunate,” said Guha.
Bose later went to the India-Bangladesh border in Sitai and met BSF personnel manning the outpost.
