Contraband haul near India-Bangladesh border, Border Security Force arrests two people

The Border Security Force (BSF) posted in north Bengal districts seized contraband goods from multiple locations near the India-Bangladesh border on Thursday.

The items, BSF sources said, were supposed to be smuggled to Bangladesh. Two persons have been nabbed in connection with the seizures.

At 3pm on Thursday, troops of the 61st battalion of the BSF posted at Hili-II border outpost in South Dinajpur apprehended Sirajul Rahaman, a resident of Hili, near the gate at the border fence. He is a resident of Hariopkhar village located beyond the fences.

While searching his belongings, they found that he was carrying Yaba tablets (that contain methamphetamine and caffeine), which have huge demand in Bangladesh, in a broom and a couple of pouches. Altogether, 315 tablets worth 1.57 lakh were recovered from him. Later, he was handed over to the Hili police station.

In Cooch Behar, a team of the 98th battalion of the central security force posted at the Koshi border outpost nabbed Mohammad Ismail Rahaman, a resident of 125 Kharkhariya village near the fence gate. The BSF personnel found five old smartphones worth around 49,000 in his possession. He had plans to smuggle the phones to Bangladesh. Later, he was handed over to the Mekhliganj police station along with the phones.

Troops of the 17th battalion of the BSF posted at the Andhigach border outpost in North Dinajpur district found eight packages in a bamboo plantation in Bhagyashree village near the border on Thursday night. A group of smugglers was carrying the packages and fled after spotting the BSF personnel. A total of 780 bottles of cough syrup worth 1.60 lakh and two cell phones were recovered from the spot.

The BSF posted under the north Bengal frontier carried out anti-smuggling drives in different locations on Thursday and Friday and seized some contraband items worth 5.04 lakh that were supposed to be smuggled to Bangladesh.
