The Congress candidate who contested from the panchayat seat in North Dinajpur — where the BSF had opened fire on Saturday — has won.

The BSF opened fire on Saturday around 5pm when some Trinamul supporters allegedly tried to capture the booth at Dhumagarh FP School, critically injuring a young Trinamul supporter.

On Monday, re-polling was held in the booth. Initially, residents were scared to vote, but after assurances by political workers of various affiliations, voter turnout rose to 87 per cent — 573 out of 652 voters cast their franchise.

On Tuesday, as results were announced, it was found that Putli Khatun, the Congress candidate contesting from the Dhumagarh seat under Sahapur-I panchayat of Goalpokhar-II block, defeated Trinamul's Farza Banu.

Md Enamul Hussain, a local Congress leader, said this win indicated that proper deployment of central forces on re-poll day led to "transparent" results.

“On July 8, the central forces fired because Trinamul was trying to rig the polls. We demanded re-polling and it was held on Monday. Initially, the residents were worried about voting, but eventually, they went to the booth. Re-polling was done in the presence of central forces in a transparent manner. The results are before us,” he said.

Md Hasibul, a Trinamul supporter, received three bullets in Saturday's firing. He is admitted to a hospital in Bihar's Purnea.

“We thought villagers would vote Trinamul to protest the firing. But some felt intimidated and didn’t go to the booth on Monday. This helped the Congress win,” said Md Jahid, Hasibul’s father.
