Complaints were lodged with police and the Election Commission of India on Tuesday against a song sung by Asansol BJP MP Babul Supriyo.
In the complaint with the Asansol police, Gourav Gupta, the general secretary of the West Burdwan Students’ Library Co-ordination Committee, said the lyric maligned the image of Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee and the government.
“The song makes unsubstantiated allegations against the Trinamul Congress and its supremo Mamata Banerjee. It is malicious and derogatory in nature and damages the reputation of the party and the leader. I thought it is my responsibility to take the help of law so I lodged the complaint,” said Gupta, who is known as an aide to Asansol mayor and Trinamul leader Jitendra Kumar Tiwari.
Sources in the district administration said an inquiry had begun.
Sources in the Election Commission said a response had been sought from Supriyo to the complaint lodged by a lawyer on behalf of Trinamul. He has been given 48 hours to file the response.
“If the Election Commission showcauses me, I will definitely give an answer. Moreover, the song was not yet officially launched by me or my party,” said Supriyo.
Supriyo released the song, recorded at a studio in Mumbai, in the social media and his twitter account on Monday. The song was shared by many on social media.
The BJP and Trinamul leadership traded charges over the song.
Tiwari said Supriyo had failed to carry out any development work for Asansol despite being an MP for five years and was spreading canards against Trinamul and Mamata. “It is confirmed that Supriyo will be given a send-off from Asansol this time,’ said Tiwari.
“… In his desperation and frustration, he is now trying to malign our party supremo,” added Tiwari.
Supriyo said it would be better if Trinamul leaders identified the lines of the songs they had objections to. He maintained the song reflected the real character of Trinamul and the state government.
“They have police and we have people with us. It was a biased complaint. The song is full of facts and truth always hurts. They must identify the lines that are hurting them and let them establish the truth,” said Supriyo.
However BJP leaders in Asansol said the controversy over the party’s poll theme song would help them get additional publicity.
