The woman whose burnt body was found in Malda was from Siliguri and killed by a factory co-worker with whom she had a relationship, police said on Wednesday and ruled out rape.
Alok Rajoria, the superintendent of police, said the prime suspect had been arrested but the probe was continuing to find answers to a few more questions. “The social media has helped us solve the case within six days,” Rajoria said.
The woman, whose charred body was found in a mango orchard in Kotwali under Englishbazar police station on December 5, was a resident of Ambikanagar in Siliguri, the police said.
After her charred body was found, police had circulated on social media photos of some of her belongings that included bangles, a ring and some threads. “She was around 25 years old and had come to Malda on December 2,” said another police officer.
According to Rajoria, the woman had an affair with Bapan alias Chhoton Ghosh. “They were co-workers at a factory (in Siliguri). She had been to Malda many times earlier and this time she came as Bapan called her,” Rajoria said.
“Bapan is married and the victim, who is a divorcee with two children, was putting pressure on him to marry her. This had led to problems in Bapan’s family. Eventually, he turned desperate and called the victim to Malda. He then strangulated her and set the body on fire,” Rajoria added.
The charred body had been found at a time of countrywide outrage over the Hyderabad and Unnao rape and murders. The Malda incident was raised in Parliament by Union minister Smriti Irani. In Malda, Opposition parties had launched demonstrations. BJP MP Locket Chatterjee had led the protests.
