Police arrested a young scientist of the Central Mechanical Engineering and Research Institute (CMERI) in Durgapur on Sunday night on charges of leaking confidential information of the central government organisation.

Rudra Chatterjee, 34, an electronics engineer posted in the robotics department of the CMERI, was picked up from his residence at Dum Dum in Calcutta. He was brought to Durgapur police station for interrogation and later arrested.

The police said the institute had lodged a complaint in November saying some confidential documents relating to transfer of employees, appointments and research work had been stolen and supplied to outsiders.

“During investigation, Rudra Chatterjee’s name came up and we arrested him on Sunday night,” said Abhishek Modi, deputy commissioner of police (east).

Rudra was produced in the additional chief judicial magistrate court in Durgapur on Monday and remanded in police custody for five days.

During his production in the court, Rudra told journalists that he was falsely implicated in the case.

Sources said Rudra had a “cold war” with the CMERI management over his transfer to CMERI, Ludhiana, recently.

He has moved court against the sudden transfer ordered by the director of the CMERI, Durgapur. The sources said Rudra was also raising voice against some alleged malpractices at the research organisation related to recruitment and transfer.

Asked about the arrest, CMERI director Harish Hirani said: “Nobody has informed me about Rudra’s arrest. Once we get the information officially we will proceed as per our rules,” he said.

Asked about Rudra’s transfer, Hirani said there was requirement of an electronics engineer in Ludhiana and he had been transferred there.
