A 32-year-old man riding a motorcycle to his office in Sector V died after he was allegedly knocked down by a dumper of the Calcutta Municipal Corporation (CMC) at the Ruby intersection of the Bypass on Thursday morning.

The dumper didn’t undergo a fitness clearance since it had expired in February 2013, a transport department official said.

Surajit Dhali used to work for an online research, analytics and data services company, police said. The accident happened around 9.15am and Surajit had his helmet on. The driver of the dumper fled soon after knocking down Surajit from behind.

As the young executive lay on the Bypass with injuries on his legs and arms, police officers took him to Ruby General Hospital. Surajit’s face didn’t have any signs of injury, said a hospital official.

“He was brought to the hospital with injuries on his legs, abdomen and ribs. One of the bones of his right leg was partly exposed, possibly under the impact of the accident,” the official said. “Doctors tried to resuscitate him but failed.”

A resident of Bansdroni New Government colony, Surajit had completed his masters in commerce from Vidyasagar University and lived with his parents and wife. Sources said he had joined the company in Sector-V in November 2017.

The Ruby intersection is one of the accident-prone crossings along the Bypass with vehicles merging from the Rashbehari connector and Garia before heading towards Ultadanga along the Science City flank.

Officers said they were trying to gather CCTV footage to understand how the accident took place. But primarily it appears the dumper hit Surajit from behind and its wheels apparently went over his legs after he fell off the two-wheeler. The dumper was registered in September 2003 with the regional transport office in Birbhum, police have learnt.

“The road tax was last paid in 2012 and its insurance was valid till that year. The owner didn’t bother to renew any of these for the last seven years,” said an officer.
