Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday asked state police to keep tabs on the activities of the Border Security Force (BSF) along the India-Bangladesh border and take steps to prevent highhandedness on the part of the central paramilitary force, hours after two Bangladeshi “cattle smugglers” had been allegedly gunned down by the BSF.

“Officials of the police and administration should keep an eye on the BSF and take steps if they resort to atrocities. If any crime is reported, they should inform local police. We want cooperation from both sides. In federalism, there should be constructive cooperation from both ends,” Mamata said at an administrative review meeting in Nadia’s Ranaghat.

She made it clear her government hadn’t accepted the Centre’s decision to increase the jurisdiction of the BSF from 15km to 50km into Indian territory from the international border. She had earlier written to the Prime Minister, objecting to it. A resolution was passed in the Assembly against the decision.

“They (BSF) should work within 15km. Elected representatives should keep a tab on their activities,” Mamata said in Ranaghat.

On Wednesday night, two Bangladeshi “cattle smugglers” were allegedly shot by BSF personnel of the 75th battalion posted at Kaimari border outpost on the India-Bangla border in Cooch Behar’s Sitai block.

In the past, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina have discussed the issue of border killings.
