Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Thursday instructed police to intensify vigil in sensitive areas to avoid the possibility of a communal flare-up in the state before obliquely blaming the BJP for trying to create unrest in the state with divisive politics.
At an administrative meeting in Ranaghat in Nadia, a border state, Mamata told the police to keep watch on attempts by “elements” to create communal discord across the state from December.
“Beginning December, some elements are planning to foment communal trouble. They have done it in Karnataka. This is the only way they know,” Mamata said with Bengal DGP Manoj Malviya sharing the dais.
“Life is a path of peace. I say this from the land of Chaitanya Dev (the 15th-century spiritual leader born in Mayapur, Nadia).”
The chief minister did not name any party but the allusion to the BJP was clear. Some BJP leaders have been speaking about a change in December. Dilip Ghosh, BJP vice-president, has said Bengal may see Assembly polls in December when the Trinamul government might fall.
