BJP supporters and civic body workers clashed in Kalyani when the latter went to demolish a reportedly unauthorised party office on government land on Saturday.
Two BJP workers and at least three civic body workers were injured. Police brought the situation under control.
Police and local sources said trouble broke out around 9am when the civic team went to demolish an illegally built BJP office as part of the ongoing clean town drive.
“Two days ago, we found that BJP workers began illegal construction of their party office on government land in Anukul More area. We asked them to stop, but they did not. Today (Saturday) we found the work on and again asked them to stop. BJP workers attacked our workers,” a municipal officer said.
BJP’s Nadia South SC-ST committee president Srinibas Mondal rubbished the charge. “Our party office is there for long. We took up maintenance work when Trinamul workers claiming to be civic-body workers warned us to stop and began demolishing the structure. This angered our party supporters who asked purported civic body workers to demolish two party offices of Trinamul nearby. One of the workers attacked me with a dah (sharp-edged weapon),” Mondal said, adding his right palm was injured.
Senior BJP leader and party’s Kalyani MLA Ambika Roy echoed Mondal’s charge.
Trinamul’s Kalyani town committee chief Arup Mukherjee denied the charges, saying: “The demolition drive is an initiative of Kalyani municipality. Trinamul is not associated with the drive and no party worker went to the spot.”
Both the political rivals have filed police complaints. No one has been arrested yet.
