A driver in the South Bengal State Transport Corporation (SBSTC) was allegedly assaulted by a civic volunteer on duty on a highway in North Dinajpur district on Monday morning.

Prithwish Biswas, the injured driver, has been admitted to a rural hospital.

A complaint has been filed against the civic volunteer and police are probing the case.

However, drivers said that police had not revealed the name of the civic volunteer.

Sources said on Sunday night, Biswas drove an SBSTC bus from Ranaghat and reached Dalkhola and on Monday morning started for Ranaghat.

As the bus neared Domohona under Karandighi police station, Biswas noticed traffic jam on NH12 and reportedly asked a civic volunteer to clear the stretch. A row ensued. Suddenly, the civic volunteer beat up Biswas, sources said.

A driver of the North Bengal State Transport Corporation (NBSTC) intervened, and the civic volunteer reportedly attacked him as well.

“It is disappointing that the civic volunteer attacked bus drivers who are also state government employees. He should be arrested. Such highhandedness against drivers is unacceptable,” said a senior driver of NBSTC in Raiganj.

Biswas, who is posted at the Ranaghat depot of the SBSTC, was taken to Karandighi block hospital.

“We suspect some police officers are trying to hush up the matter and not revealing the accused civic volunteer’s name to us,” said an employee of the NBSTC in Raiganj.

A police officer in Karandighi, however, said that the civic volunteer had been identified and would be questioned.
