The saffron surge in most of Bengal’s 91 civic bodies, including the Calcutta Municipal Corporation which will go to the polls next year, has caused jitters in Trinamul as the BJP has secured a lead in many wards in the Lok Sabha elections.
Trinamul leaders have examined the results and found most civic bodies will be lost if polls are held now. “This is alarming. We don’t have a road map on how to address this. We will look to Didi for guidance,” said a Trinamul source.
In the Calcutta Municipal Corporation elections of 2015, Trinamul had secured 123 seats out of the 144 in all. Booth-wise results of the Lok Sabha polls show the BJP leads now in 50 Trinamul-run wards. The 50 include areas of most senior Trinamul leaders in Calcutta, including Ward 73 where Mamata resides.
Besides the CMC, elections are due in 2020 in civic bodies like the Siliguri Municipal Corporation, the Asansol Municipal Corporation, the Howrah Municipal Corporation and the Chandernagore Municipal Corporation.
