Protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act hit train services on Friday as agitators set up blockade on tracks at Uluberia and ransacked the station, railway officials said.

At around 3.20pm, a group of people pelted stones at trains and set up blockade at Uluberia station, the spokesperson for South Eastern Railway said.

The Chennai-bound Coromandel Express and Digha-bound Kandari Express were at the station when the protest broke out.

“The driver of Coromandel Express was hit by a stone, but no passenger was hurt,” said Sanjoy Ghosh, chief public relations officer, South Eastern Railway. He said the agitators smashed lights of the Uluberia station, took away eight computers, unreserved tickets and Rs 4 lakh in cash.

Around 7pm, protest broke out at the Chengail station on the Howrah-Kharagpur route.

Railway officials said at around 8.30pm, the agitation was withdrawn.

Services could not be restored till late at night because the tracks were being checked to find out if there was any damage, the officials said.

Sajal Ghosh, a resident of Sealdah, was on his way to Digha on vacation when his train got stalled at Uluberia station.

“A mob was pelting stones at passing trains. We downed shutters of all the windows of the compartment. The station had been ransacked and was pitch dark. Not a single light had been left intact. Neither were there any officials around,” Ghosh said.

More than 10 long distance trains were stranded at various stations and several local trains cancelled, said railway officials.
