The Criminal Investigation Department (CID), which is probing the alleged multi-crore cattle smuggling case in Bengal, along with central investigating agencies, will interrogate Enamul Haque in Tihar Correctional Home in New Delhi.
Enamul is alleged to be a key player in cattle smuggling. Apart from the CID, the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate have been investigating the alleged smuggling. Haque was arrested in Delhi in February following several hours of interrogation at the ED headquarters and has been lodged in Tihar since.
The arrest came within a month of the Supreme Court granting him bail following his arrest by the CBI in the same case.
“We would like to question him in connection with a case of alleged cattle smuggling that was lodged with the Raghunathganj police station in Murshidabad a few years back,” said a senior CID officer.“We have received the necessary clearance from Jangipur court.”
The same court on Friday issued arrest warrants against Enamul’s three nephews— Jahangir Alam, HumayunKabir and Mehdi Hasan— whom the CID holds used to allegedly handle a bulk of Enmaul’s cattle smuggling trade and even handle money. The arrest warrants were issued following an appeal by the CID after the trio failed to appear for questioning despite repeated reminders. The state investigating agency had earlier raided the offices of the three on Bentinck Street in Calcutta.
The team had later sealed the offices after collecting some documents. Prior to the raid in Calcutta, the CID had raided a hotel, allegedly owned by one of Enmaul’s relatives located in Omarpur More in Murshidabad’s Raghunathganj and later sealed the property. Officers said the hotel was allegedly used to control the smuggling of cattle from Murshidabad to other districts including Birbhumon the way to Bangladesh. CBI has said they have traced several properties of Enamul in Birbhum, which were purchased in 2017 with the help of Anubrata Mondal, the arrested Trinamul president of the district. Mondalhad allegedly helped Enamul buy land parcels at a price lower than the prevailing rate across parts of Surul inBolpur, CBI officers said.“We would like to question him on how he used to direct his nephews to park money received from the alleged cattle trade to locations beyond India,” the CID officer said.
