The mother of Debjani Mukherjee, a main accused in the Saradha deposit mobilising scam, has written to the CBI, alleging that the Criminal Investigation Department of Bengal was putting mental pressure on her daughter to frame Opposition leader Suvendu Adhikari and CPM veteran Sujan Chakraborty in the case.

“The CID is pressuring my daughter to name Suvendu Adhikari and Sujan Chakrabarty saying she was witness to both of them receiving money from Saradha,” Sharbari Mukherjee said.

The CID has denied the charge.

A CID officer said: “A CID team had interrogated Debjani at Dum Dum Correctional Home on August 23 in the presence of the staff of the correctional home.... The agency conducts investigation following due procedures of law and it will continue to do so.”

Reacting to the allegations, Suvendu said it was disgraceful for the CID.

“Disgrace, total disgrace! The once glorious CID has now become the paid janitor of WB’s Bua-Bhatija. CID is indulging in criminality for advancing the nefarious interest of the Banerjees by intimidating under trial prisoners to give false statements against WB Opposition Leaders," he tweeted.

Chakrabarty, on the other hand, said the CID was failing in what it was supposed to do.

“Two kids have been murdered and the CID has not been able to make any headway but is busy in such shameless activities.”

“People will laugh at the CID," Chakrabarty said and added that he was open to any investigation by any agency. "If the government has the guts, it should order an investigation right away. I am challenging them to go ahead,” The CPM veteran said.
