The CBI on Monday submitted a chargesheet against Sheikh Shahjahan and six others in connection with the attack on a team of Enforcement Directorate officers who had gone to raid the residence of former Trinamool Congress strongman in Sandeshkhali on January 5.
The ED officers who were being accompanied by central force personnel had to flee following the attack. The ED team had reached Shahjahan’s house in connection with alleged irregularities in the ration system in the state.
The CBI, which was handed over the probe of the case by Calcutta High Court, said the seven named in the chargesheet included Shahjahan’s bother Sheikh Alamgir. All the seven were arrested.
The chargesheet was submitted to the additional chief judicial magistrate, Basirhat court, North 24-Parganas. Charges under sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act were brought against the seven.
CBI officers said the investigation was on and a supplementary chargesheet would be filed if more evidence emerged.
On January 5, as the ED officers were trying to open the door of Shahjahan’s house, a mob of around 200 men and women attacked them and forced them to flee from the spot.
The ED later lodged a complaint against Shahjahan and others for instigating the mob from inside the house.
The ED officers had alleged that their belongings were snatched and they were beaten up on the instructions of the Trinamool Congress leader who was hiding inside his house.
