The CBI team in Bengal, probing into the alleged multi-crore cattle smuggling case, is gearing up to seek a detailed health report of Trinamul leader Anubrata Mondal, whom it wants to interrogate, from SSKM Hospital where he has been admitted since Wednesday.
CBI sources said they were keen to find out the reasons that necessitated Trinamul Birbhum chief Anubrata’s hospitalisation and if some of the ailments of the Trinamul leader were chronic.
Anubrata was scheduled to face interrogation at Nizam Palace in Calcutta on Wednesday but the leader complained of chest pain and landed up at SSKM Hospital.
Officers said they would like to present the report of his medical condition before a panel of CBI’s doctors to find out how long they have to wait before the patient can be summoned again for questioning.
On Wednesday, Anubrata requested a four-week break before facing interrogators.
The CBI team mentioned his plea in its report to its Delhi bosses on Thursday.
“We will also consult legal experts before submitting a status report on Anubrata Mondal and the aborted questioning session before the court,” said a senior official.
On Thursday, a seven-member team of doctors of the SSKM Hospital from various specialities including ENT, physical medicine, endocrinology and chest visited Anubrata and decided on keeping him admitted for the next few days for a series of tests.
“He is a patient of sleep apnea and other ailments like blood sugar and hormonal disorders. He also has back pain. There has been a slight improvement but he needs constant monitoring,” said a senior official of the hospital.
CBI sources said they didn’t want to rush Anubrata but would like to keep an eye on daily developments at the hospital. Over the next few days a team of officers could meet doctors to find out if Anubrata needs hospitalisation for weeks at a stretch or he can be released before.
Sources said CBI on Thursday consulted its lawyer at CBI court on West Burdwan’s Asansol and the team was likely to file a plea on Friday seeking Anubrata’s medical status report from the hospital
“The next course of action on Anubrata will be in accordance with instructions from superiors in Delhi," said the official.
