The CBI has apparently found out that Hanskhali police didn’t act on a complaint lodged by the mother of the girl who was gang-raped by the son of a Trinamul Congress leader and his friends on April 4 and died a day later.

Sleuths of the central investigating agency are likely to quiz the officer-in-charge of the Hanskhali police station, Mukunda Chakraborty, and the investigating officer to know why did not bother to start a suo moto investigation against at least two persons who first grabbed the girl’s body and took it to crematorium with the support of others.

The CBI thinks Hanskhali police in Nadia district should have started a separate case on suo moto basis against them. The girl’s mother in her complaint said Anshuman Bagchi and Parimal Biswas had taken the body to the unauthorised crematorium where they lit the pyre. She also said the cremation was conducted in the presence of her husband who was held at gunpoint.

“But surprisingly, the Hanskhali police are yet to take any action against Bagchi and Biswas. The duo have not yet been traced and taken to court for recording their statement before a magistrate under CrPc 164 so far,” a CBI official said.

The CBI on Monday recorded the statement of the girl’s mother and tried to corroborate what she had stated in the complaint. They asked her about the role of the two but she couldn’t explain in detail.

Sources said repeated inconsistencies in the statement of the girl’s parents, particularly the mother, had emerged as a hurdle to the probe.

The sleuths on Monday re-examined the statement the mother had given before the magistrate when certain inconsistencies cropped up.

An official of Ranaghat police district said: “We tried to act on the complaint but some suspected persons could not be traced.”

The girl had been gang-raped allegedly by Trinamul leader Samar Gayali’s son Braja Gopal alias Sohail and his friends at a birth-day party. The girl died apparently from excessive bleeding.

The CBI took over the probe following an order from Calcutta High Court.

Delegation of various political parties visited the girl’s parents after the tragedy. A central BJP delegation arrived at Hanskhali on Friday and one of the members disclosed the girl’s identity in violation of rules.
