CBI investigators, led by DIG Akhilesh Singh, went to Bogtui on Friday night with the aim of recreating the sequence of events that led to the massacre on the night of March 21 when bikeborne goons had raided the village shortly after the murder of Trinamul leader Bhadu Sheikh.

The CBI team reached at 9.28pm, considered to be in sync with the time the goons entered Bogtui on March 21.

To recreate the incidents of the night of the carnage, which has claimed nine lives, Singh and his team took along with them firemen, including the of¬ficerincharge of the fire brigade in Rampurhat, Partha Sarathi Ghosh, cops on duty that night and acting inspectorincharge of Rampurhat police station and first investigation officer in the case, Swargajit Bose.

The CBI team, along with firemen and cops, visited the houses following the sequence of the fire brigade that had tried to douse the flames on the night of March 21.

“We are trying to get the actual record and timeline of the arson and activities of all those agencies responsible to control the situation,” said a CBI source.

Bose became the first investigating officer to be interrogated after the CBI took over the case.

CBI officials said they were planning to match the DNA samples of the seven charred bodies from the Bogtui carnage with their family members in a bid to confirm the identities of the deceased.

“We plan to match the DNA as family members have pointed to several flaws in identification of the bodies that were buried in their absence. DNA samples of the charred bodies were collected during postmortem and now we have to collect those of the family members,” said a CBI source.

Key witness Mihilal Sheikh, who lost his mother, wife and daughter in the massacre, said he was sure the bodies were of his family members as they had taken shelter in the house of Sona Sheikh, but still wanted the matter to be confirmed. “It is really good news for us if the CBI goes for a DNA test as we wanted proof that they were our kin,” said Banir¬ul Sheikh, Mihilal’s brother.

Nine persons were killed in Bogtui following the murder of Trinamul leader and deputy chief of the Barshal panchayat, Bhadu, on March 21. When the carnage came to light on March 22, seven charred bodies were recovered from the burnt house of Sona Sheikh.

Identifying the bodies became tough for the police and administration as they were charred beyond recognition.

The police had arrested 20 people named in the FIR. Ten of those arrested had been sent to police custody, while the rest were remanded in judicial custody by a Rampurhat court.

On Friday, the CBI appealed before a Rampurhat court to take into custody the 10 persons remanded in jail custody for five days of interrogation. A CBI advocate told the court that the CBI wanted to interrogate them together with Anarul Hossain, a Trinamul leader and accused, and others.

The court granted the CBI the custody of nine person as Rampurhat correctional home authorities said one among the 10 seemed to be a minor. The court asked the CBI to verify it within four days.
