The CBI on Tuesday sent a letter to Trinamul Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, informing him that the agency would not summon him for questioning in the alleged teacher recruitment scam till further orders from the Supreme Court.
“It is hereby intimated that the effect of the notice served to you on April 17, 2023... for appearance before the IO (Investigating Officer) ... is kept in abeyance until further order of the Hon’ble Supreme Court,” the CBI letter read.
The letter had the signature of the superintendent of police of the CBI’s anti-corruption branch (ACB) in Calcutta.
The letter was sent to the Diamond Harbour MP a day after the CBI had summoned him for an appearance before an officer at its Nizam Palace office on Tuesday for questioning as part of the ongoing probe into the alleged irregularities in the appointments at state-aided schools across Bengal.
Monday’s notice had reached Abhishek a couple of hours after the Supreme Court had stayed till April 24 Calcutta High Court’s permission for the CBI and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to question him.
The questioning was supposed to be held around allegations of arrestedTrinamul youth leader Kunal Ghosh that he was facing pressure from central investigation agencies to implicate Abhishek in the case.
The summons on Monday had prompted Abhishek to allege that the central agency was out to “harass” and “target” him even though the Supreme Court had stayed the questioning.
