The Sealdah-bound flank of APC Road, near Jagat cinema, remained closed for the second day because of a cave-in caused by the collapse of a sewage line on Monday.

The stretch will remain closed to traffic on Wednesday morning as well but vehicles would be allowed to pass in a single file by Wednesday afternoon, police and civic officials said.

Calcutta Municipal Corporation (CMC) officials had earlier said the sewage leak caused by the collapse would be repaired by Tuesday morning and traffic restored on the stretch.

A corporation engineer told Metro that the sewer line that collapsed has already been replaced. “We replaced a 40ft-long and 12-inch-diameter pipe, a portion of which had collapsed by last night. A new manhole is being made and the casting work is underway,” the engineer said on Tuesday evening.

Once the casting is done, the road will be restored. “All materials needed for road restoration are ready. We hope to be able to restore a portion of the flank so that at least one small car can pass though one side by Wednesday afternoon,” the civic official said.

The police had to divert Sealdah-bound buses that ply on APC Road following the cave-in on Monday. Buses coming via the Maniktala and Rajabazar crossings were diverted via Amherst Street-MG Road-Sealdah flyover and onto APC Road. Buses coming from Phoolbagan went via Beleghata Main Road.

Small cars headed to Sealdah had cross over to the Shyambazar-bound flank in front Jagat cinema for an 80-metre stretch.
