The CBI on Wednesday interrogated Raja Ghosh, former chairman of Birbhum district primary school council and a nephew of arrested Trinamul Congress leader Anurbata Mondal, in a bid to know whether he could have parked the money he had allegedly earned for arranging safe passage for cattle being smuggled into Bangladesh in the accounts of his kin and close associates.
Sources said during the two-hour-long interrogation, Ghosh had been asked about multiple properties and told to submit relevant documents related to his and others' bank accounts. The interrogation took place at Ratan Kuthi guest house — the temporary CBI office in Santiniketan.
Ghosh did not take calls when this correspondent called him up after the interrogation.
The CBI raided a rice mill in Bolpur on Wednesday, a source said.
Anubrata’s sister allegedly has a share at the mill.
The CBI had earlier found a rice mill that was partly owned by Mondal’s daughter Sukanya.
The CBI had started a fresh round of investigation in the cattle smuggling case on Tuesday. The agency had submitted a fourth supplementary chargesheet naming Mondal in the case to the special CBI court in Asansol on October 7.
During the fresh round of the probe, sources said, the central agency is trying to find out whether Mondal’s relatives and associates other than his daughter Sukanya and the late wife Chhabi, benefited from the illegal money.
“The agency may question a few others whose bank accounts and properties are under scanner,” said a source.
