His friends Almaan Khan, 21, and Syed Sahil Hasnain, 22, both residents of Palm Avenue, have survived the fall, the police said.

Around 1.10am on Saturday, a car lost control and fell into a roadside canal a few feet below the Basanti Highway near Koyla Depot plunging the three occupants into the water along with the car, the police said.

All three were rescued out of the water and taken to the Calcutta National Medical College and Hospital where one of them was declared dead. The other two youths were discharged after treatment.

An unnatural death case has been registered.

An officer of Anandapur police station said the two youths who survived have stated that their friend who passed away, was at the wheel, however, the family of the deceased have claimed that he was not driving.

A senior police officer said it was yet to be ascertained who exactly was driving.

“The body has been sent for post-mortem to ascertain the exact cause of death. If there is any foul play, that would be clear in the post-mortem report. We have not received any complaint from the deceased’s family till now,” said the officer of the East Division on Saturday evening.

The Telegraph tried to contact the family of Mohammad Rayyan Alam but the phone went unanswered.

A family member of Hasnain and Khan (they are related) told this newspaper that both the youths were “better”. He, however, did not divulge any details about the incident.

“I am at the police station. I will not be able to speak any more,” he said.
