A car fell into Kestopur canal after the driver lost control on Tuesday.

The silver Hyundai i20 was on its way from the Punjab National Bank island in Salt Lake Sector I to the canal.

The driver of the car, Gautam Barat, escaped without serious injuries, an officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate said.

The car first hit an iron grille on the canal bank before falling into the canal that is around four-feet deep, the officer said.

Body found inside building

A The body of a 32-year-old man was found hanging from the ceiling of a room on the top floor of a four-storey building on Beleghata Main Road on Monday night. Sujit Ghosh, a resident of the building, was taken to the NRS Medical College and Hospital, where he was declared dead.

Exam date

The joint entrance examination board will conduct a common entrance examination titled JELET on June 28 for admission to the second year (3rd semester) of the four-year bachelor’s degree courses in engineering technology and pharmacy.

JU entry test

Jadavpur University will hold an interview on March 31 for admission to a one-year diploma course in human rights and duties education. The last date for application is March 25.

Man dies trying to stop fight

A man died while trying to stop a fight between two of his neighbours in the Burtolla area on Monday night. Pramod Shaw died after one of the neighbours pushed him and he fell on a pile of sharp-edged tiles. Shaw was declared dead at hospital. The neighbours — Abhishek Gupta, 28, and Jibon Debnath, 32 — have been arrested.

Cyclist dead

A 40-year-old man riding a cycle died after being hit by a vehicle on Hyde Road around 3.45pm on Tuesday. The victim has been identified as Lal Baba Roy, a resident of Sonai Road in the Garden Reach area. He was declared dead at SSKM Hospital.

Gold haul at airport

More than 2kg of gold was seized from two passengers who had reached the city from Dubai and Riyadh on Tuesday. The passenger from Riyadh was carrying four gold bars weighing over 300gm and valued at Rs 17.09 lakh in his check-in baggage. The passenger from Dubai was carrying gold bars weighing 1.8kg worth Rs 83.17 lakh in a microwave oven.

Former cop falls to death

A 76-year-old retired police officer died after falling from the roof of a five-storey building in Pashupati Bhattacharya Lane of Behala on Tuesday morning. Chittaranjan Banerjee was taken to Vidyasagar State General Hospital, where he was declared dead, police said. No suicide note was found, the police said.

Mayor plea

Mayor Firhad Hakim distributed jute bags among residents of a part of Chetla on Tuesday. The mayor urged the residents to stop using plastic bags.

IIEST fest

The Aerospace Engineers Society of India and the Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology (IIEST) organised ABHIYANTRIX, a three-day technical fest, that ended on Sunday. A quiz competition was held as part of the fest. The director of the institute, Parthasarathi Chakrabarti, said, the fest will encourage students to take up research.
