Governor C.V. Ananda Bose on Wednesday said there should be no instance of Rabindranath Tagore’s memory being obliterated or ignored while reacting to a question on the recent controversy over the Visva-Bharati’s installation of plaques that did not have the Nobel laureate’s name.
“There are certain values which can find no compromise. Kaviguru Rabindranath Tagore for everyone in Bharat who sings the Jana-Gana-Mana. Gurudev is a feeling and emotion felt in the blood and heart,” the governor told the reporters in Calcutta on Wednesday.
“There cannot be any instance where Gurudev’s memory is obliterated, ignored. Gurudev has enjoyed the highest respect in the minds of all Indians. There is no question of in any manner overtly or covertly obliterating the valued, sacred memory of Gurudev,” he added.
Earlier, Bose asked Visva-Bharati vice-chancellor Bidyut Chakrabarty to explain why Tagore’s name was missing from the plaques installed to commemorate Unesco honouring Santiniketan with a heritage site tag. He advised Chakrabarty to replace the plaques with ones with Tagore’s name.
The marble plaques installed by the varsity have the names of Prime Minister and Visva-Bharati chancellor Narendra Modi and varsity vice-chancellor Bidyut Chakrabarty inscribed on them.
As the name of Tagore, the founder of Santiniketan and Visva-Bharati, was missing, it sparked outrage in many quarters, including Trinamul. Even the BJP did not support it. This prompted varsity authorities to claim those were temporary installations and would be replaced by ones sanctioned by the Archaeological Survey of India.
Asked whether the varsity has received any content for the plaques, Mahua Banerjee, acting public relations officer of Visva-Bharati, said: “I was not informed whether any text from the ASI was received to replace the older plaque.”
She failed to say when the controversial plaques would be removed and new ones installed.
“It is very unfortunate for us that even after criticism from all quarters, the plaques have not been removed,” said Sudipta Bhattacharyya, the president of Visva-Bharati University Faculty Association, a teachers’ body.
Trinamul, at the instruction of chief minister Mamata Banerjee, has been continuing a demonstration in Santiniketan since last Friday, demanding the replacement of plaques with ones that have Tagore’s name inscribed on them.
