Candidates contesting as Independents or under the banner of the BJP alleged organised attacks by Trinamul supporters in at least three locations of the state on Saturday.

In Cooch Behar, a dissident Trinamul worker contesting as an Independent alleged that in the small hours of Saturday, a group of suspected Trinamul supporters fired gunshots at her house and ransacked homes of her supporters.

Sahabi Bewa, contesting a seat in Putimari-I panchayat, Dinhata, said attackers reached her house in Kharija-Balakura village around 12.30am. “They fired some rounds at our house. We are lucky no one was hurt,” said Jahurul Haque, her son.

The attackers reportedly ransacked six houses of Trinamul supporters who had rallied around Bewa, said Haque.

Trinamul denied the charges.

In Malda, the husband of a BJP worker contesting for a panchayat seat was assaulted by alleged Trinamul workers on Friday.

Rezaul Haque, whose wife Samima Khatun was fielded by the BJP for a seat in Enayetpur panchayat of Manikchak block, was reportedly called by Anowar Ali, the husband of Trinamul candidate Salma Sultana.

“Rezaul was thrashed badly and is admitted to Malda Medical College and Hospital,” said a BJP leader.

Local Trinamul leaders called it a minor skirmish exaggerated by the BJP.

At Dantan-I block of West Midnapore, BJP leaders alleged that on Saturday, the husband of one of their candidates was beaten up by Trinamul supporters. Later, the candidate and her son were attacked, said sources.
