Chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Wednesday set both administrative and political roadmaps for the forthcoming panchayat polls, asking rural body functionaries to wrap up pending works within three months and telling Trinamul supporters how to win elections by countering Opposition parties.

“You have to ensure victory in panchayat polls as well as in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections... This is the time to work and you wrap up all pending works in your three-tier gram panchayats within three months. Find out those deprived of government schemes and help them get benefits,” Mamata said at a public rally in Nadia’s Krishnagar.

Officials have said Mamata’s three-month deadline to finish the pending development works hints at the possibility of the state government holding rural polls in February.

Mamata said though the Union government had frozen funds for the 100-day job scheme, her government was trying its best to provide work to the rural population. Mamata also pointed out how Opposition parties, including the BJP, CPM and the Congress, joined hands to counter Trinamul and asked her party workers to campaign on this.

“Before every election, Ram (BJP), Bam (Left) and Shyam (Congress) get together to conspire (against Trinamul).... You have to tell this truth (to the people),” Mamata said. The chief minister said factional feuds would not be tolerated in Trinamul.
