The Matador, transporting fruits and vegetables, had not stopped though the signal had turned red at the crossing, an officer of the Bidhannagar commissionerate’s traffic wing said. It was transporting goods under the state government’s public distribution (Sufal Bagla) scheme.

Zillur Rahaman, from Baduria in North 24-Parganas, had complained of chest pain on Friday night and was being taken to hospital, police said.

The van turned on its side on impact of the crash. Rahaman and Rakib Mondal, the driver and a relative, suffered head injuries. They were declared dead at Salt Lake Sub-divisional Hospital. Two other relatives in the car were admitted to another hospital.
