The state university of technology has announced the results of graduating students without conducting any examination, the first among the state universities to do so.
Maulana Abul Kalam Azad University of Technology (MAKAUT) announced the results on July 20. All private engineering colleges and management schools are affiliated to the university.
Subhashis Datta, the university’s controller of examinations, said 75 per cent marks had been given on continuous internal assessments and five per cent on attendance in the final semester and the remaining 20 per cent on home assignments in the same semester.
The higher education department had advised universities to assess graduating engineering students by giving 80 per cent weightage to the best of the aggregate of previous semester result/mid-semester results/internal assessments and 20 per cent to home assignments.
The technology university assessed students only on their final semester performance and no weightage was given to previous semesters, a university official said on Tuesday.
A BTech student in the eighth semester had appeared for three internal assessments.
Two assessments were done before the lockdown and one online assessment during the lockdown.
Colleges had made alternative arrangements for those with connectivity problems.
The government had advised universities to publish results by July 31.
Later, the higher education department wrote to the University Grants Commission (UGC) objecting to its July 6 decision telling universities to “compulsorily” conduct an examination for graduating students by the end of September either online or through the pen-and-paper mode or the blended mode.
Saikat Maitra, the vice-chancellor of the technology university, was among the group of state university vice-chancellors who wrote to the UGC on July 10 protesting its July 6 directive.
In case of incomplete or discrepancy in the results, students have been advised to contact their colleges within seven days of the publication of results and colleges would alert the university, an official said.
Jadavpur University pro-vice-chancellor Chiranjib Bhattacharjee said the university would upload the results by July 31.
Presidency University could publish the results this week, an official said.
The university assessed students by giving equal weightage to previous performance and internal assessment.
“Although our advisory had recommended assessment based on the 80:20 mechanism, we did not object to Presidency’s decision,” an official of the higher education department said.
Calcutta University will publish results within July 31.
