Haldar used to run a shop of filling air in tyres with his son. On June 12, two men on a scooter landed up at the shop along BB Chatterjee Road around 3pm and asked the father-son duo to fill the vehicle’s tyres with air, the police said.

“The shop was closed in the afternoon. When Haldar and his son told them they could not fill the tyres with air as the machine was not functioning, the two picked an argument with them,” an officer of Kasba police station said.

After some time, the men left the spot only to return later with a larger gang, the police said.

Haldar and his son were overpowered and attacked with a hammer and a cycle fork, the police said.

They were left bleeding on the spot.

People of the area took the two to hospital from where they were discharged after preliminary treatment.

A day later, Haldar had to be admitted to SSKM Hospital for head injuries and he underwent an operation. He was discharged three days later. But his condition deteriorated and he was again admitted to SSKM on Thursday night. He died of injuries early on Friday, the police said.

Cops had started a case of causing grievous hurt against the men based on a complaint lodged with Kasba police station by Haldar’s son Ashish soon after the attack.

The charges have been amended to murder after Haldar’s death.

A search is on for at least three more men in connection with the attack, the police said.
